Dr.Thanos Patelis

THANOS PATELIS, PRESIDENT-ELECT

Thanos Patelis is vice president of analysis, strategy, and operations for the College Board’s Research and Development department, a position he’s held since 2004. Thanos earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from College of Holy Cross, continued his education at Fordham University’s Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, where he earned his master’s degree in experimental psychology and his Ph.D. in psychometrics. He has also pursued a master's at the University of Connecticut in educational leadership.

Thanos’ responsibilities are diverse. In addition to overseeing all operational and business components of the department, Thanos is responsible for program evaluation, applied research and statistical analysis. He facilitates collaborations with other regional and national educational organizations including state departments of education and school districts, and oversees policies involving College Board data. Outside the College Board, he’s worked as an official statistician for professional football, including the National Football League and the New York Jets Football Club. Among other positions, Thanos also has worked as a research associate for Stamford (CT) Public Schools where, in addition to his duties managing the testing program and implementing program evaluations, he introduced in-service initiatives for teachers on classroom assessment.

Thanos has been an adjunct professor since 1987 at several colleges, including Fordham University, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Fairfield University, the University of Bridgeport and New York University. He teaches such courses as research methods, psychometric theory, and advanced statistics. For the last 12 years, Thanos has been an adjunct professor and research scholar at Fordham University’s Graduate School of Education, where he teaches and participates in dissertation committees.

Thanos has been involved in NERA since 1989 where he first presented as a graduate student. Thanos believes that NERA offers a wonderful forum for researchers and believes that it is the membership that makes this organization so wonderful, collaborative, and productive.
