KATHARYN E. K. NOTTIS, PRESIDENT

Katharyn E. K. Nottis is an Associate Professor in the Education Department at Bucknell University, Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. She earned her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and also has a Master of Science in Education and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary and Special Education from Buffalo State College. Her research has primarily focused on meaningful learning in science and engineering education. She has examined the generation of analogies, how students’ misconceptions about critical concepts can be changed, and whether the use of different instructional modalities affects learning. A strong believer in collaborative research, she has been involved in research projects with colleagues from chemistry, chemical engineering, and seismology. Currently she is a co-principal investigator with chemical engineering colleagues from Bucknell University and other institutions on two NSF grants, one to explore student misconceptions in critical areas of heat transfer and thermodynamics, and the other, to investigate self-directed learning in chemical engineering.

Katharyn is active in university service, having held the position of Common Learning Coordinator at Bucknell University. In 2004, she also received the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching at Bucknell. She has been active in NERA, serving as the 2004 conference co-chair and a member of the board of directors from 2005-2008. Prior to coming to Bucknell University, she was the Education Specialist at the National Center for Earthquake Engineering Research at the State University of New York at Buffalo where she was involved in enhancing earthquake education and disaster preparedness.
